Holy Trinity Cathedral celebrates 130th anniversary

Publish Date: 27-Apr-2021

The Holy Trinity Cathedral celebrated her 130th anniversary on 17 April with a Thanksgiving Eucharist. Originally scheduled to be held on 7 June 2020, the service was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic public gathering restrictions imposed by the government. Although the Thanksgiving Eucharist was attended by the clergy and some parishioners in person, many had to share the joy by watching the event on live stream on the internet because of social distancing measures.

The Rt Revd Timothy Kwok, Bishop of Eastern Kowloon, was the celebrant of the service while the Very Revd Chan Kwok-keung, dean of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, preached. Many clergies who had served at the cathedral also attended.

In his sermon, Dean Chan said that the cathedral had dedicated herself to manifesting the holiness of God in the past 130 years. It was recorded in the cathedral’s history book, In Kowloon City as It is in Heaven, that the forebears of the cathedral had applied the biblical teaching of love to the society by founding the Heavenly Kingdom Chapel, the Heavenly Kingdom School and an almshouse in the Kowloon Walled City. The Holy Trinity Church (now the Holy Trinity Cathedral) started cultivating a three-pronged approach of coordinating between churches, schools and social service units in Kowloon City some one hundred years ago. In 2021, the cathedral is still in close contact with schools and social service units in the parish.

The cathedral had relocated twice in the past and weathered the Second World War (WWII). The current cathedral building, built in the Chinese Renaissance style, is the third building. Although this newest building had also been occupied by the Japanese army during WWII, God is still watching over her so that her parishioners could receive peace and blessings from heaven.

Dean Chan has been appointed dean of St John’s Cathedral while the Revd Franklin Lee has been appointed sub-dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, both will start their new ministries on 1 May.
