St James’ Settlement partners with BOC Life to launch Green Future Project

The generation of huge volumes of solid waste and the limited landfill capacity are problems faced by Hong Kong for many years. To meet the challenge of these problems, St James Settlement and Bank of China Group Life Assurance (BOC Life) announced on 30 June to jointly launch a new green project called “Brave the Storm Together, Guard Our Green Future”, which comprises elements of education, job creation and waste recycling. BOC Life will donate HK$1,000 to St. James’ Settlement from each policy successfully issued under its “Forever Wellbeing Whole Life Plan”. The activities include the Little Green Shopkeeper programme and re-employment programme for middle-aged women in their Green Ladies & Green Little second-hand clothing store. The Little Green Shopkeeper programme offers virtual reality experiences and shopkeeping training for school children through interactive and fun-filled education activities. Participating children will learn about recycling, reducing and reusing old clothes and gain an understanding of the capacity of the landfill situation in Hong Kong. In each of a 2-hour session, parents can join in role-playing and learn to adopt eco-friendly habits with their children. Green Ladies & Green Little is the first eco-social enterprise operated through a consignment model in Hong Kong. Established in 2008, the social enterprise has been promoting eco-friendly habits and offering employment opportunities for middle-aged women. Through reselling a collection of high-quality fashion and accessories, it promotes second-hand clothing for sustainable use of natural resources.
