Kindergarten teachers gather at the Holy Trinity Cathedral for professional development
Publish Date: 24-Apr-2017
Anglican (Hong Kong) Early Childhood Education Council held the 2016–17 Joint School Teacher Development Day on 11 March at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The Rt Revd Timothy Kwok, Bishop of Eastern Kowloon, chaired the sharing session on the theme “Peace under the Lord’s Wings”. Bishop Kwok expressed that school principals and teachers face pressures from various sources. School staff needs to learn to be at peace and not to lose sleep at night as this is crucial to their mental health. He also encouraged people to seek help from others when they face difficulties. Some problems could not be solved in a day, but there are enough graces from God. Ms Cynthia Lam, Senior Training Officer at the Equal Opportunities Commission, was invited to talk about the anti-discrimination ordinances. She explained that the statutes are not to constrain a person’s views, but to prevent these views from stripping opportunities from others. There are four anti-discrimination ordinances in Hong Kong: Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Family Status Discrimination Ordinance, and Race Discrimination Ordinance. Schools are required to establish proper measures, policies and training for staff to prevent all the different types of discrimination and to handle complaints in an appropriate and timely manner. Schools are also encouraged to provide more special care for ethnic minority students and those with special needs.
