Catholics and Lutherans in Hong Kong have moved one step forward on the path to ecumenism in 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Cardinal John Tong of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and Bishop Chang Chun-wa of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong jointly endorsed the Chinese translation of From Conflict to Communion at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on 14 July.

The translation project began in 2016. The published document carries two editions of From Conflict to Communion, one for the Catholics and another for the Lutherans. The two editions retain specific terminology familiar to the faithful of the two Christian traditions. This is the second time a joint document between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church is translated into Chinese. The first was the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, completed in 2014.

The endorsement ceremony was accompanied by a prayer gathering. The event was attended by members of both churches and representatives from other denominations. The Provincial Secretary General of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, the Revd Canon Peter Koon, was among the attendees. Candles were lit to signify the two denominations’ determination to reach communion.
