Child abuse concerns Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui
Publish Date: 25-Jan-2018
Hong Kong saw a spate of child abuse cases in the last few weeks. As a church, a school sponsoring body, and a provider of social services, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui is highly concerned about this phenomenon. Balancing a hectic schedule with child caring duties creates a lot of pressure. However, parents should not vent their frustrations on their children because communicating positively and calmly is the only effective way to raise a child. HKSKH churches, schools, and social services units regularly run seminars, Alpha parenting courses, and parenting groups. Parents are encouraged to take part in these to explore more effective methods of parenting. To prevent tragedies, teachers and social workers also have a role to play by being alert to signs of abuse. Dr Law Chi-kwong, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, said that he was exploring ways with the education sector to strengthen support for school social workers. Besides stationing a social worker in each primary school, other measures being considered included the providing social work in kindergartens, introducing case management for high-risk families, and implementing a mandatory reporting system on child abuse.
