A week of prayer for Christian unity

Given the theme “Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power” in 2018, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was held 18–25 January. Two hundred Christians from different denominations gathered at Ward Memorial Methodist Church on 20 January to pray for human dignity at an ecumenical prayer for Christian unity. To remind the congregation that people in former colonies are still being exploited in the present day, servers put three chains around a Taizé cross as Cardinal John Tong, representing the Catholic Church, and Bishop Ben Chang and the Revd Hung Shing-ha, both from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, led the participants in saying the prayer for reconciliation. This act symbolizes the congregation’s determination to remove the chains of slavery and become new men. Over the water in Macau, a similar prayer service for Christian unity was celebrated on 20 January in St Lawrence’s Church. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in Hong Kong was kick-started by the joint ecumenical communion service and breakfast fellowship on 18 January at the Methodist Church.
