Volunteer puppeteers perform fun and educational shows in kindergartens

Publish Date: 05-Feb-2018

A team of volunteer puppeteers visited SJS Kathleen McDouall Kindergarten and performed a lively show to teach children the importance of eating vegetables and not to waste food. After the show, the puppeteers went up to their young audience so that the children could shake hands with the puppets.

All puppets were handmade by retirees who took part in a puppet workshop organized by St James’ Settlement’s Hubba Lab. Ten retirees have completed the first phase of the project. Not only did they learn how to make and control moving mouth puppets, they also learned how to communicate with children. Having made the puppets, the retirees wrote their scripts and organized shows. The project offers retirees a chance to challenge themselves and teach children how to maintain a healthy diet and manage their money in a fun way.

“Retirees nowadays like to accept challenges that can let them prove their capabilities,” said Ms Carmen Ng, the manager of Hubba Lab.

The workshop is part of a two-year project, funded by the Alfar Charitable Trust. The project is split into four phases, each consisting ten training sessions and ten performances. The current volunteer puppeteer team has forty members. They have performed twelve shows in different venues and visited 1,200 kindergarten children.
