Servers encouraged to get closer to God at annual thanksgiving service
Publish Date: 09-Mar-2018
More than a hundred altar servers and parishioners from the three dioceses and the missionary area of Macau gathered at Holy Trinity Cathedral on 2 February, the feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, to attend the servers’ guild’s annual Eucharistic service. Bishop Timothy Kwok and Bishop Andrew Chan were the celebrant and the preacher respectively, while Archbishop Paul Kwong examined members of the second executive committee. In his sermon, Bishop Chan stressed the importance of altar servers. Not only do they assist the clergy during the celebrations of sacraments, but they also help congregants devote themselves to the liturgies. A server’s encounter with Jesus Christ is the most important experience; servers who were not able to forge close ties with God often end up serving themselves instead of God. Bishop Chan observed that some church members viewed their own services for the church as a job, the fuel for which was other people’s appreciation. He reminded servers that serving means persevering in their roles even when their work is not rewarded. “If God had called upon you to serve at the altar, do not view your duties as a job but an opportunity to serve God,” he told the servers.
