Members of vestries and mission church councils learn to be better stewards
Publish Date: 08-May-2018
Two hundred members of vestries and mission church councils across Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui gathered at Diocesan Boys’ School on 28 April for a learning day. The event consisted of a Eucharistic service in the morning, a talk on the subject of stewardship, and workshops in the afternoon where participants shared their experiences and discussed the practical aspects of church ministries. The talk after the Eucharist was delivered by the Bishop of Western Kowloon, the Rt Revd Andrew Chan. He told his audience that a steward had many hats to wear: a manager maintaining service quality, a butler ensuring good use of resources, a trustee sharing responsibilities, a leader of those serving a household, and even the representative of a family. While stewards had many important duties, they could never replace their masters, said Bishop Chan. Using the metaphor of a steward and his master, Bishop Chan spoke about the relationship between God and humankind: “Bearing the image of God, every human being has been entrusted by God with a steward’s powers. However much a man’s sinful nature makes him want to surpass God, the truth is a man can never take God’s place.”
