Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui reflects upon its history in education

Publish Date: 18-May-2018

The Standing Commission on Education has started an archival research project on the education history of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. The Revd Canon Dr Chan Hin-cheung is leading a team of researchers to review and assess the church’s education ministry of over a century old.

The group responsible for the project held a briefing session on the midterm progress report on 5 May in All Saints’ Cathedral. The researchers presented three reports on the vision for education of the Anglican Communion, the history of HKSKH’s school sponsorship, and the ethos of HKSKH schools respectively.

During his speech, Dr Allan Yuen, the chairman of the Standing Commission on Education, pointed out that social changes impacted deeply on education. The relationship between social change and education was an important research topic. Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui had been providing schooling to the public for over 160 years, and this project revealed how early educators had understood their field, their vision, and their way of realizing their vision.

One of the researchers Mr Wong Chi-fung said to Echo that they expected the project would be wrapped up before the Eighth General Synod in 2019 and hoped to present their final report during the meeting.
