Octopus Cards Limited and St James' Settlement organized the Drawing and Mobile Application Design Contest earlier this year as part of their joint effort Octopus Kids' Nurturing Programme—Curating our Smart City 2018. The contest aimed to enhance participants' understanding of the concepts of smart city by giving them a chance to demonstrate their knowledge in STEM. The organizers received more than 1,500 entries from over seventy schools, and prizes were presented to thirteen primary students and twelve secondary students at the awards ceremony on 28 June. Lee Hok-yin from Christian Alliance SW Chan Memorial College won championship in the senior secondary division with a mobile app that provides useful information for visually-impaired people with guide dogs. Lee’s schoolmate Cheung Choi-chun was champion of the junior secondary division. He designed an automated horseshoe crab feeding system that could be remotely controlled with a mobile app. Mr Sunny Cheung, CEO of Octopus Cards Limited, said, “Innovation and problem-solving skills are crucial to sustaining our smart city development. We at Octopus are happy to have provided a platform for the students to unleash their creativity via STEM concepts.”
