St James’ Settlement concludes character development programme for toddlers

Publish Date: 28-Nov-2018

St James’ Settlement concluded the second phase of its character development programme in October 2018 and presented its results on 13 October at Ming Hua Hall at the Settlement’s headquarters. Dr Chow Wai Yin, lecturer at the department of cultural and religious studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and her colleague Dr Lam Sze Ting, reported on their findings while representatives of five participating HKSKH kindergartens shared their experiences.

Joined by Dr Chow and the Religious Education Resource Centre, St James’ Settlement’s Rachel Club started the second phase of the programme in May 2017 in five schools: St Paul's Church Kindergarten (North Point), SKH Sham Shui Po Kei Oi Church Kindergarten, Heep Yunn School Private Kindergarten, St Peter's Church Kindergarten (Stanley), and The Church of The Epiphany Kindergarten.

The first and second phases of this project have trained 130 teachers from seven schools to apply the narrative approach to character development education, providing guidance to over 6,600 toddlers and parents.

The narrative approach to character development was proven effective in the first phase of the project. The second phase focused on studying character education and positive emotions of toddlers, and has achieved preliminary success.
