Van drivers offer the urban poor with low-cost removal service

Publish Date: 18-Nov-2019

Sponsored by the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre has set up the Common Lab project to provide low-cost home removal service to people living in sub-divided flats. The project is a network of van drivers who offer their service at a discount to help alleviate the financial burdens for those in need. On the first anniversary of the project, staff of the centre presented the project achievements at a meeting on 27 October.

The network was established in December 2017 and is now made up of fourteen van drivers, who volunteer their services. Over forty families have benefited from this project. The discounts the volunteer drivers offered ranged from 25% to 73% off the market prices. The average price each family paid was approximately HK$830, representing about 50% less than that of the median market price. Some user families saved as much as up to HK$5,000.
