HKSKH Outreaching Team helps ethnic minority groups integrate into society

Publish Date: 10-Nov-2020

The HKSKH Outreaching Team for Multi-Cultural Community, located at Long Ping Estate Shopping Arcade in Yuen Long, is staffed by people from different ethnic backgrounds. The team provides services to ethnic minority groups scattered in Yuen Long, Shatin, the Northern Districts, and Kwai Tsing, and help them integrate into the local community as well as access mainstream welfare services should the need arise.

Mr Daniel Ma, HKSKH Welfare Council Service Director, said, “Because of language barriers, members of ethnic minority groups have difficulty understanding how to access help provided by various mainstream welfare organizations in the community where they live, and other social and community activities that they can participate in. In order to answer their needs, staff members need to engage the groups proactively and offer them resources.”

He also pointed out that trust and relationships with people from ethnic minority communities were built by the staff members, not the organization or the activities by themselves. The multi-cultural team played an important role because their understanding of the different cultures enabled their clients to reveal their difficulties and needs in their own language.
