HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre held its 47th annual meeting on 21 November. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was conducted online, only a few members of the management committee and staff members attended in person. The Most Revd Matthias Der, Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island, was the officiating guest of honour. He praised the innovativeness of the centre, and its ability to discern the needs of local residents in Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan districts by providing relevant services. Speaking from his experience of having lived in North America for 31 years, he said he especially appreciated the services that the centre provided to the minorities in the two districts. “I was an ethnic minority back then. Although I spoke English and was educated there, I still sensed a gap between myself and the mainstream society. The centre’s vision, courage, and willingness to support ethnic minorities and help them overcome their challenges are admirable,” said Bishop Der. He stressed that because of the pandemic, people’s livelihoods are now taking a blow. The Church’s social service ministries become even more important so that it can manifest the love and light of Jesus Christ in the darkness.
