Clerics of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui gathered at Tung Chung on 27–29 November for the annual provincial clergy conference. Archbishop Colin Johnson of Toronto and Bishop Patrick Yu, former suffragan bishop for York-Scarborough in the diocese of Toronto, were invited to share their thoughts on the theme of the meeting, “Leading God’s People in a Changing World”. During his address, Archbishop Johnson reminds the congregation that God is willing to renew all things. When the Church seek to work with God on His ministries, they have to consider how to adapt to this rapidly changing world. In this regard, the role of the clerics becomes vital, especially in leading the Church to cope with challenges posed by modern society. One way of coping, Archbishop Johnson and Bishop Yu points out in their address, is adaptive leadership. Archbishop Johnson defines adaptive leadership as “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive.” This practice includes six features: it is experimental; it requires diversity; it builds on the past; it enables the capacity to thrive; it takes time; and it generates losses.
