Diocese of Hong Kong Island introduce prison ministry to parishioners

Publish Date: 03-Jun-2019

The Committee on Mission of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island organized a seminar to introduce parishioners to different kinds of evangelical works and to encourage them to take part in the ministry that matches their gifts.

The seminar was conducted in two parts led by the Revd William Newman, priest-in-charge of St Stephen’s Chapel, and his team, and Mr Lo Chi Yeung, General Manager of Ministries at Hong Kong Christian Kun Sun Association, respectively. They shared their experiences in prison ministry. For many years, Fr Newman and his team visit prisoners serving long-term and life-term sentence at Stanley Prison every week.

To express his belief in bringing colour into the darkness of prisons, Fr Newman dressed in a green top and colourful socks at the seminar. He said that when sharing about light and darkness with a prisoner, he asked him did he feel in his heart that the prison was a dark place. To his surprise, the prisoner said that he only found light after being imprisoned. Furthermore, he believed that only in prison could he keep away from his past life of sin, and learn of the gospel.
