Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Task Force for the Ministry of Environmental Conservation

Background

For the coordination of the provincial organizations and the faithful to safeguard the integrity of creation, sustain and renew the life of the earth (i.e. one of the Five Marks of Mission of the worldwide Anglican Communion), the Standing Committee of the General Synod of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui has mandated to set up the Task Force for the Ministry of Environmental Conservation. The Task Force is comprised of representatives from the churches, schools and social service units in the province, and led The Rt Revd Andrew Chan, Bishop of the Diocese of Western Kowloon. The scope of works includes the review of current environmental situations, making proposal and advocacy of environmental conservation policy in the province, and the cooperation and communications with the government and other NGOs in the area of environmental conservation.

Latest Developments

To enable the faithful of the church and the staff of the provincial organizations to recognize and support the environmental conservation, the Task Force would give updated information in the provincial web-site and Echo from time to time. As of today, the Task Force has represented Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui to participate in the following activities and projects:

Global Response to Climate Change

In response to the ACC Resolution 16.08 on, the Task Force has made follow-up actions and appointed a member to participate in the work of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network.

The Season of Creation

The Season of Creation is advocated by Anglican Communion Environmental Network, together with Global Catholic Climate Movement, World Council of Churches and etc., and is running yearly between September 1 and October 4. It is the time of the year for the faithful of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui to pray and care for creation. The related prayers, liturgy and details can be found at www.seasonofcreation.org

Charter on External Lighting

The Environment Bureau launched the “Charter on External Lighting” in early 2016 to invite the publics to switch off external lighting installations of decorative or advertising purposes during the preset time for minimizing the light nuisance and energy wastage. The Task Force has signed the Charter on behalf of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, and the switch-off requirement would be enforced by the provincial organizations.

Sustainable Development

According to the World Commission on Environment and Development, the definition of Sustainable Development is : "the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." The Council for Sustainable Development under the Environmental Bureau of HKSAR invites all sectors of the community to work hand-in-hand in order to have a change of mindset to bring about full integration of the needs for economic and social development, and to achieve a sustainable future for Hong Kong. In response to their appeal, The Task Force has set up meeting with The Council for Sustainable Development, and appointed members to attend their discussion forum to be held in the local communities.
