St James’ Settlement’s community art project wins prestigious Hong Kong award

Publish Date: 08-Jun-2021

A project of the St James’ Creation, a St James’ Settlement’s community art programme, won the Award for Arts Promotion at the 15th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards. The winning project Our Stories - Memories in Clay was backed by the Hong Kong government’s Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme and was planned by the renowned Hong Kong ceramist Chris Lo. Fifteen professionals from different backgrounds partnered with fifteen recovered patients participating in the St James’ Creation programme to create 450 ceramic art objects for different community exhibitions held in late 2019.

These exhibitions included the first public display in Hong Kong of a giant ceramic sculpture installed on the roof of a tram station with a skyline formed by three thousand pieces of ceramics. Other works were displayed in fifteen shops in Wan Chai where viewers can take part in a treasure hunt to find all the hidden pieces of the artworks. The most innovative of these events was a ceramic exhibition held on a tram, the first of such events in Hong Kong. Citizens could join and try their hands at making pottery on the tram and gain some brand new experience. Over sixty artists, thirty local shops and organizations took part in the project and over 960,000 people participated in this large scale community art project.

The 15th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards Presentation Ceremony was held in the afternoon of 30 May at Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre. Mr Matthew Cheung, the Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR, and Mr Caspar Tsui, Secretary for Home Affairs officiated at the ceremony. Ms Josephine Lee, Chief Executive Officer of St James’ Settlement, and Mr Hui Pak, an artist representative of St James’ Creative, received the award on behalf of the whole team.
