Publish Date: 24-Aug-2021
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake devastated the Caribbean nation of Haiti on 15 August. The hypocenter was approximately 120 km away from the capital Port au Prince. The estimated number of deaths exceeded 2200 and over 12,000 people were injured. As rescue continues, the estimated numbers of injured and deaths are expected to rise. Some 61,000 houses collapsed, 76,000 were damaged and 137,000 families were affected in areas that were most severely damaged, such as Grand Anse, Nippes, and Sud. Approximately 500,000 people need emergency humanitarian aid, which is about 40% of the population of these affected areas. Archbishop Andrew Chan appealed to the faithful to pray for the injured and for people who lost family members and homes in the earthquake. People should also pray that God will be merciful to the victims and help them out of their difficulties, their pain, and rebuild their homes as well as rediscover hope. He also prays that God will enable the deceased to rest in peace and comfort the hearts of the bereaved.
