Participants of the Moral, Religion and Civil Education Project share their experiences

Publish Date: 05-May-2017

The Religious Education Resource Centre (RERC) founded the Moral, Religion and Civil Education Project in July 2015. This is a three-year project that is scheduled to end in June 2018, and its aim is to promote moral education, religion and civil education with Christian faith at its core. The project is based on the teachings of the eighth verse of chapter six in the Book of Micah. The theme of the first year was “Act Justly,” and this year it is “Love Mercy”.

The centre held the mid-term conference for the project on 23 March at SKH St. Mary's Church Mok Hing Yiu College. All school principals and teachers participating in the project were invited to share their experiences and talk about the upcoming events they planned. Attended by over forty people, the event started off with a video clip titled “Life Is Not a Marathon”. It stimulated participants’ thoughts on how schools and society moulded students and how this affected students’ potential. After this, the staff at World Vision Hong Kong and the RERC talked about the many resources and training programmes suitable for the schools to use.

In the past year, the centre has provided support in areas such as teacher training, student activities and internet resources. The training programmes for teachers included retreat camps and workshops under different themes. The centre also took students to Kam Tin, New Territories, to visit minorities living in Hong Kong and the Crossroads Foundation. One of the larger-scaled student events was the “Act Justly” lecture held at SKH Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School on 30 June last year. Over a thousand Form 1 to Form 4 students from five participating schools attended.

After listening to the experiences of other colleagues, some teachers are actively thinking about how they might utilize the resources provided by the project to assist them in teaching and widen the horizons of both themselves and students.
