Mentees’ lives transformed after three years

Publish Date: 16-Jun-2017

The three-year mentorship programme co-organized by SKH St Simon’s Lui Ming Choi Secondary School and SKH Bishop Baker Secondary School came to an end this March. The closing ceremony was held at the end of April.

The mentorship programme aimed to help student participants set personal development goals. Each student had been assigned a mentor who provided guidance to the mentee. The Church of United Brethren in Christ Tuen Mun Integrated Children and Youth Service Centre and schools were responsible for providing various kinds of training. Students were also encouraged to achieve a two-year savings target,. which would be topped up by contributions from a matching fund and the special financial incentive from the Child Development Fund. The resulting sum of money would be utilized by the students during the third year of the programme to realize their goals.

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Stephen Sui, called the programme a success at the ceremony. He cited a research conducted by the University of Hong Kong when he said that mentorship programmes could greatly benefit students by teaching them how to manage their resources, a skill which he believes will help society alleviate intergenerational poverty in the long run. Wong Ding-pang, the principal of St. Simon's Lui Ming Choi Secondary School, praised the mentors in his welcoming speech by saying that they had inspired the students by the own lives, in the same way as Jesus guided his disciples.
