Mainland and local religious leaders take part in interreligious celebration together

The Colloquium of Six Religious Leaders of Hong Kong held a celebration on 9 December to observe its own fortieth anniversary as well as the twentieth anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In addition to local religious dignitaries, Mrs Carrie Lam, the chief executive; Mr Zhu Weiqun, chair of the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; and Prof. Tan Tieniu, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government, were also in attendance as guests of honour.

The celebration coincided with the visit to Hong Kong of a delegation from Mainland China, led by Mr Zhu. The leaders of five different religions were among the delegates, who were received at St John’s Cathedral on 7 December by the Archbishop of Hong Kong, the Most Revd Dr Paul Kwong; the provincial secretary general, the Revd Canon Peter Koon; the chancellor, Dr Moses Cheng; the deputy director of HKSKH Welfare Council, Mr Joseph Man; and the executive secretary of education, Mr Peter Kwok. At the meeting, the guests were briefed about the structure of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, and the visions and operations of its educational and social services arms.
